Course Roles for Blackboard Learn at UMass Amherst

Role Title	Description	Role Specification Page
Student	The default role for all student enrollments. Students assigned to a CPE course in SPIRE will be placed into its corresponding Blackboard shell under this role. Capabilities include submitting coursework, participating in discussions, and accessing course materials. Tool access is restricted to only what is made available on the course menu by the instructor.
UMA Instructor	The default role for all instructor enrollments. Instructors assigned to a CPE course in SPIRE will be placed into its corresponding Blackboard shell under this role. Capabilities include building and managing content, changing tool availability, grading student materials, and editing the theme of the course. UMA Instructors may not enroll accounts into the course nor copy the course's content into another shell.
UMA Teaching Assistant	The default role for all TA enrollments. TAs assigned to a CPE course in SPIRE will be placed into its corresponding Blackboard shell under this role. Privileges are identical to the UMA Instructor role.
UMA Course Builder	Custom role intended for course design. Available to users not on the SPIRE roster upon the instructor of record's request. Capabilities include adding and editing content, managing tool availability, and reviewing course roster. Course builders do not have access to the Grade Center and cannot edit the theme of the course.
